How to provide first aid care in fracture of leg? Leg fracture, a painful yet frequent condition, is often detected or doubted in situations when the patient can’t get immediate expert help. In these cases, mostly road accidents, first aid plays a very important role in managing leg fracture effectively and reducing complications related to it. Therefore, it is very important for all to know the first aid treatment related to it. Here are few tips on how you can manage leg fracture on the spot: Immobilise Immobilising the broken limb is very essential in order to avoid further soft tissue damage and avoid any nerve or vessel damage. An umbrella, stick, or newspaper roll can be used as a sling to immobilise the part temporarily and the person should be rushed to the nearby hospital. Stop bleeding If the fracture is of open type then it becomes important to control bleeding. Try to keep the limb elevated and tie a sterile bandage on the affected area. Cold can be applied as it helps in vasoconstriction of blood vessels and cause less bleeding. It also helps in relieving pain. Cold should not be applied for more than 10-15 minutes. Avoid swelling Swelling in the limb may cause many complications and should be avoided at any cost. Elevate the limb and wrap an elastic or crepe bandage around the limb to avoid swelling. Compare the affected limb with normal limb even after you got a plaster cast. Report your doctor if you notice any increase in limb size. Inspect the limb Always check if the limb looks pale and touch to see if it is cold. These signs are present when blood circulation is obstructed. Try to free the limb as much as possible and rush him to the doctor. It may lead to gangrene if not treated on time. Dr. Suresh Bansal, our orthopaedic surgeon, claims that he have seen a significant number of cases in his career where the patient reaches him for consultation after much damage has already been done by unrecognised or incapable consultants, claiming to be expert doctors. Therefore, it is important to treat fractures only with the help of expert consultation to avoid further complications. SCIATICA: MYTHS AND FACTS!! by Dr Suresh Bansal How do I know it’s Sciatica? Pain that spreads out from your lower spine to the buttock and makes way to the back of the leg is the hallmark of Sciatica. A certain discomfort is felt almost everywhere along the nerve pathway affected by it. The back of the thigh and calf are the worst affected areas in terms of pain. The pain can vary though. It can be a mild ache to a sharp burning sensation leading to excruciating pain. At time, it can feel like a jolt or electric shock. Coughing and sneezing can worsen the condition and prolonged sitting can aggravate the symptoms. Some people also experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot. You can also have pain in one part of the leg while numbness in another part. If in doubt, contact our Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Suresh Bansal at 9811062832 or come to us at Bansal Global Hospital in Delhi for sciatica treatment. When to consult an ORTHOPEDICAIN? Cases of Mild Sciatica usually go away over time. You should consult your doctor at the earliest of self-care measures fail to ease your pain. You can wait for a week before taking professional help but don’t try too many things without proper consultation. However, get immediate help if: The pain is followed by a violent injury, such as a traffic or domestic accident which directly hit the area. It’s affecting your bowel or bladder movements terribly or abnormally. Risk Factors: Age: Age-related changes in the spine, such as herniated disks and bone spurs are the most common causes of sciatica. Obesity: Excess body weight can increase the stress on the spine and contribute to the spinal changes that trigger sciatica. Occupation: A job or regular activities that requires you to twist your back, carry heavy loads, or drive a motor vehicle for long periods might also play a significant role in causing Sciatica. Prolonged sitting: People who have to sit for prolonged periods or have a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to develop sciatica than active people. Diabetes: Diabetes doesn’t directly motivate the symptoms but the way a diabetic body uses blood sugar, increases the risk of nerve damage which ultimately leads to Sciatica. Complications With the help of professionals, Sciatica is fully curable. Though in a few complicated cases, it may lead to permanent nerve damage. If taken proper care and medication as per expert recommendation, one can fight Sciatica within a few weeks. What to feed your baby after 6 months of birth? It can get a bit stressful and confusing for mothers when their babies turn 6 months old and they have to decide about the kind of food they can give to their young ones. There are certain foods which might affect adversely to your baby’s health hence you have to be very careful while feeding them. Here’s a list of safe food variants which is safe and healthy for your buttercups: Cereals Cereals are most important source of carbohydrates and are really important part of your child’s diet in the initial months. Grains should be boiled and soupy so that is easier to feed the baby and easier to digest as well. Rice is a great option to feed your baby as it is easy to feed and very less chances of being allergic. Fruits Fruits are a good source of vitamins as well as iron content. Fruits like banana, apple, peaches and pears are good options for infants but they should be mashed properly or else it may get stuck in their food pipe. Make sure to give them very small portion of these fruits or they might not be able to digest it properly. Vegetables Boiled veggies make another healthy choice when it comes to vitamins and minerals. Well boiled vegetables like potatoes, pumpkins, carrots, squash and sweet potato. It can be given in combination with rice or can be made as soup to make it a bit interesting for your baby. Dairy Proteins are very essential for growth and development of kids. Dairy products such as milk and curd are great preference for kids. Again adding mashed fruits in milk and curd is a good idea. It is not just hassle free but also healthier. Other foods There are a number of foods which can be fed to your baby. Lentils or dal can be added in rice as it is loaded with proteins, micro and macronutrients. Other than this, quinoa is loaded with innumerable nutritional value and is also gluten free. Porridge can be introduced to kids which can be made with quinoa, wheat or oats and is both healthful and appealing. Remember that your child has just begun with the diet, don’t feed him big portions of food as he isn’t used to it yet. Also, take special care of the hygiene conditions as well. If your child shows aversion to food completely, you shouldn’t ignore it. Take him/her to an experienced paediatrician for consultation and act accordingly. Effects Of Air Pollution On Children We all are aware of the contemporary condition of the capital. Due to catastrophic increase of pollutants in the air, children have become highly vulnerable to respiratory disorders which can affect them lifelong. We often tend to ignore it depending on the thought that as children they are stronger than other age groups and that they will heal much faster. But unfortunately that’s not true. To be precautious, we need to know the implications first. So, here’s a few points that notes to what extent the air pollution can affect your child: Susceptible to Asthma Asthma is common in children who live in metro cities. Children are more susceptible if there is any family history of the same. It is a very painful condition where bronchospasm takes place and breathing becomes difficult. Pollutants like dust and particulate matter make the condition worse by stimulating production of mucous. air pollution on childrenDifficulty in Lung Functioning Lung’s overall efficiency decreases due to air pollution as your lungs have to deal with suspended particulate matter. Polluted air is also dry which makes it difficult for the lung to humidify and mucous production is increased for this reason leading to further congestion. Allergic reactions Pollution is known to deteriorate allergic conditions in children. Pollution is associated with increase in cough, wheezing, and dyspnoea in children. It is important for kids to wear mask when going out in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, etc.. They should avoid going out during peak seasons of pollution and smog. Skin reactions Other than internal infections, air pollution can also affect the quality of your children’s skin and hair. It not only loses its lustre and softness but can also develop life-long blemishes and skin problems if not taken care of properly.
