Moreover, the chain of this opinion giving has so much impact, that there are a few things which have eventually held their place for being true, even when they aren’t. In this segment, BGH brings you the 10 most common misconceptions about Pregnancy you need to stop believing. Number 1: You should now eat for two. Explanation: An absolute no. Being pregnant doesn’t mean you should be gobbling up food all the time because you are now ‘double’. That’s not true. (Provide the link for pregnancy diet article) Number2: You should be at complete rest during pregnancy. Explanation: Many Indian families go crazy when any member of the family is pregnant. Well, that’s their way of showing love and that’s totally fine until they make you bed ridden all the time. Moving around and exercising (at expert recommendation) is in fact good for your mental and physical well being. It also helps keep a check on your weight gain. So, it’s completely healthy to take a stroll or two in the mornings and evenings and further exercise to keep you fit. Number3: You can determine the sex of the baby by the way shape of your stomach. Explanation: It is believed that if a woman is carrying low it is a boy and if she is carrying high, it’s a girl. This conception has no scientific basis. The shape of your belly depends on the position of fetus and your muscle size and structure. It has nothing to do with the sex of the baby. Number4: If you suffer from heartburn, you will have a hairy baby. Explanation: It is a common myth that if a woman suffers from heartburn, the baby will be born with lots of hair. It’s far from true. Heartburn is one of the common conditions during pregnancy. You should avoid spicy food to get rid of it. If it’s excessive, you need to book an appointment with your doctor instead of waiting for a hairy baby! Number5: You should not eat papayas during pregnancy. Explanation: You can have papayas during pregnancy but it should be a fully ripe papaya. In fact, ripe papayas are good source of Vitamin C and E. It also contributes in adding fibre and folic acid to your diet. However, unripe papayas are harmful as it has some substances which can cause uterine contractions and create complications. Nowadays, the excessive use of chemicals to ripen fruits faster make it difficult to identify a naturally ripen papaya. Therefore, doctors don’t openly advice to have it in your diet. Number6: Eating certain foods can make your baby dark or fair. Explanation: Some people believe that taking caffeine or iron supplements can make your baby dark and consuming saffron can make it fair. That’s not true. Even though caffeine is generally to be avoided during your pregnancy days (can take small amounts after medical checkup), iron is important for your body. Also, saffron cannot make your baby fairer. The color of the baby depends on the genes of the parents only. There are many other myths and misconceptions that follow but the best way to differentiate and take the best decision is by consulting your gynecologist! If you doubt anything, don’t decide over your instincts and book an appointment at the earliest.

SCIATICA: MYTHS AND FACTS!! by Dr Suresh Bansal How do I know it’s Sciatica? Pain that spreads out from your lower spine to the buttock and makes way to the back of the leg is the hallmark of Sciatica. A certain discomfort is felt almost everywhere along the nerve pathway affected by it. The back of the thigh and calf are the worst affected areas in terms of pain. The pain can vary though. It can be a mild ache to a sharp burning sensation leading to excruciating pain. At time, it can feel like a jolt or electric shock. Coughing and sneezing can worsen the condition and prolonged sitting can aggravate the symptoms. Some people also experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot. You can also have pain in one part of the leg while numbness in another part. If in doubt, contact our Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Suresh Bansal at 9811062832 or come to us at Bansal Global Hospital in Delhi for sciatica treatment. When to consult an ORTHOPEDICAIN? Cases of Mild Sciatica usually go away over time. You should consult your doctor at the earliest of self-care measures fail to ease your pain. You can wait for a week before taking professional help but don’t try too many things without proper consultation. However, get immediate help if: The pain is followed by a violent injury, such as a traffic or domestic accident which directly hit the area. It’s affecting your bowel or bladder movements terribly or abnormally. Risk Factors: Age: Age-related changes in the spine, such as herniated disks and bone spurs are the most common causes of sciatica. Obesity: Excess body weight can increase the stress on the spine and contribute to the spinal changes that trigger sciatica. Occupation: A job or regular activities that requires you to twist your back, carry heavy loads, or drive a motor vehicle for long periods might also play a significant role in causing Sciatica. Prolonged sitting: People who have to sit for prolonged periods or have a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to develop sciatica than active people. Diabetes: Diabetes doesn’t directly motivate the symptoms but the way a diabetic body uses blood sugar, increases the risk of nerve damage which ultimately leads to Sciatica. Complications With the help of professionals, Sciatica is fully curable. Though in a few complicated cases, it may lead to permanent nerve damage. If taken proper care and medication as per expert recommendation, one can fight Sciatica within a few weeks. Common Lactation Problems and their Solutions Though it is very much known to all, that breast feeding is one of the most natural processes of existence, as it can be. But unknown to many is the fact that it doesn’t come that naturally to the mother. The mother constantly struggles to keep up with this new phase in her life, and in the course, faces some common problems. Bansal Global Hospital here lists some the most common lactation problems as noticed in new mothers (by experienced Gynecologists), and offers some tips that might come handy to you: Problem 1: My child falls asleep while nursing, how do I know he’s still feeding? Solution: This is normal and almost every breast feeding mother goes through this. Simply put a bit of pressure (just a bit) on your breast to fill your infant’s mouth with milk. Your baby will suck and swallow the milk and be active again. You can also stroke your baby under the chin to encourage sucking. Problem 2: Pain while latching Solution: It’s normal for new mother to feel a bit of pain while they just start at breast feeding, but once the child is latched and you still feel pain lasting longer than a minute, you need to look into it. Check the position of your child. Make sure her mouth is wide open and chin pressed to the breast. Also, check your breasts aren’t too dry. You should wear loose clothing and go for doctor recommended creams when you are not nursing the baby. If the problem persists, book an appointment with an experienced gynecologist. Problem 3: The quantity of milk produced is quite much and my baby is fussy to feed as the flow is increased. Solution: While some mothers struggle at producing enough milk for their infant, some produce more than required and that also poses a problem as the baby is unable to feed properly due to the large quantity he’s sucking at one go. Try switching to both sides within a gap of few minutes, if you face similar problem. Another tried and tested formula is to block a breast for certain time. For example, for four hours or so, feed your child from the same breast, the other breast will become full and fullness of makes less milk eventually. Problem 4: Clogged Ducts Solution: Often, one of the pores facilitating milk flow is covered with multiple layers of skin. It is also known as milk blister. It feels like a large grain of sand is stuck in there and is painful. It’s not harmful for the baby so you can keep nursing. To get rid of the blister, massage it gently. You might also need to prick it with a sterilized needle to remove the blockage. Problem5: Low Milk Supply Solution: As stated earlier, many new mothers suffer to produce just enough milk for their infant. Frequent nursing aids in increasing milk supply. Moreover, take special care of your diet to increase the quantity of your milk. Click here to know about a Mother's diet for increasing breastfeeding. Tips to Reduce Knee Pain in Old Age Though knee pain can’t be stated to be inevitable after a certain age, but the fact is that a significant part of the population suffers from it. Moreover, keeping in view the Indian lifestyle, the body is supposed to give in earlier than it should be. As a person ages, there’s a drastic change in the physical activeness of the body and hence giving rise to various problems including knee pain. If you or someone from your family is also going through the same phase and experience knee pain more often, you should keep in consideration the following points to reduce knee pain: Walking: As mentioned above, inactivity is the root cause of knee pain in most of the cases. As the work load decreases with age, elder people tend to stop their physical movement. To balance it, one must make it a routine to go for morning/evening walks to keep a check on your body’s energy utilization and keep it fit. A sedentary lifestyle makes knees stiff and hence painful. Message Therapy: It helps in reducing mild pain in the knee. Take some quantity of olive or other message oil, and apply it on your knee area and message it for a while. You will feel the difference. Repeat it at least twice a day. Calcium: Add calcium preparations to your diet. Milk is a rich source of calcium so you can add milk products to your daily intake. It helps you make your bones stronger and getting rid of knee pain or any kind of joint pain. Just wrap ice cubes into a hand towel and compress it to the painful area of your knee for about 10-15 minutes. The procedure can be repeated several times a day till the pain subsides. Turmeric: Turmeric is known well for its healing properties. It has anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidant properties that help in getting rid of knee pain. You can add it to various foods or milk to include it in your diet every day. Make sure you are using natural turmeric and not the adulterated ones found in the market these days.Bansal Global Hospital Lose Weight: If your weight more than you should at this age, you should seriously consider losing out some fat before it worsens. Obesity increases the burden on your knees and results in severe pain. If your knee is giving you a hard time and you are in pain most of the times, it’s time to consult a doctor. If ignored, the pain may worsen with age making it almost impossible to get rid if!
