Why Is It Important To Get Regular Orthopaedic Bone Check Up Above 50 Years Of Age? A regular health check up has become important part of our lives to stay at pink of health but in geriatric population, it holds much more importance. After 50 years of age body starts to change and eventually deteriorates if not taken care of. Despite of proper nutrition and physical activity certain conditions do creep in. In order to treat them, they should be detected early. To detect degenerative changes Degeneration of joints is a natural process after 50 years of age. It is prominently seen in knee and spinal joints. Though we cannot stop the process but we can slow down the process and minimise the complications related to it. Any vigorous wear and tear of joints can be noticed in regular screening process. This may help in improving the prognosis of the joint condition. To avoid bone thinning Bone loses its density with age due to a numerous reasons like less physical activity, low metabolic rate of body and menopause in women etc. Reduction in bone density goes unnoticed if regular check up is not done which may lead to fragility fractures and further complications related to it arise in old age. Bone densitometry scan is done to keep a check on bone health and if there is reduced density calcium supplements and exercises are prescribed to avoid fractures. To prevent deformity Deformity can also occur due to numerous reasons and mainly because of weak muscles. Most commonly, deformities are seen in spine such as stooped posture, scoliosis and kyphosis. If these are not treated on time, it may compress spinal nerves and cause numbness, radiating pain and weakness of limbs. Other than this weakness of leg muscles may lead to knock knees or bow legs which lead to unequal forces dissipation on joints and hasten the degenerative process. Maintaining muscles and early diagnosis of deformities can save you from lot of pain and keep you going for a long time. To keep musculoskeletal pain at bay Improper musculoskeletal functions may lead to generalised weakness and has the tendency to disable the patient to its lowest. Proper ergonomics can be maintained after consulting a practitioner to minimise stress on body due to daily activities. Regular screenings and check up can help to rule out biomechanical faults and reduce the chances of injury so that we can enjoy life to its fullest. To detect any malignant tissue Cancer has become increasingly common in old age. Malignant tissues are notoriously known to metastasise in long bones of the body as they are rich in blood supply. Cancer is usually present without symptoms until it has spread to a larger part of body. Regular tests can help to diagnose cancer at early stage and control it better. What causes the killer Dengue? Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne and carried disease caused by the dengue virus. Every year, hundreds of people suffer from the disease and many of them end up their lives fighting with the fever. As it has been always said, prevention is better than cure. And to prevent, you must know what causes it. Bansal Group of Hospitals, based on previous cases and data from other reliable sources, noted down some findings regarding the causes of dengue fever. The deadly dengue virus is mainly of four types. Once a patient is affected by one of the viruses, he/she is immune from that particular virus but is still prone to the other three. In fact, if a patient is affected by another dengue virus after recovering from one of the viruses, the risk of the condition being severe increases. It might lead to hemorrhagic fever. When a mosquito bites a person infected with dengue virus and again bites a healthy person, the virus is carried off to the healthy person as well. The risk is more for people living in tropical areas. The symptoms and signs normally take 10-15 days to show up after the mosquito bite(s). It is therefore recommended to households to keep a check on mosquito population in their surroundings. If one person is affected in a household or neighborhood, the infection can be carried by a bunch of mosquitoes. To keep the mosquitoes away is the only way to escape dengue fever. If any signs and symptoms of dengue fever show up, you must immediately take medical help to prevent it from getting severe. At Bansal Group of Hospitals, our expert medical team takes immediate steps to detect the virus and to mitigate the effect of the virus. For more information about signs and symptoms, check out our next blog.
what we can do to ensure mosquito free surroundings What can you do? As all these diseases root from mosquitoes, the main task is to bar it from reaching you. Though it’s quite impossible to be sure that you are free from mosquitoes everywhere, there are a few points you should remember to make sure you do your part. Let’s have a look on what we can do to ensure mosquito free surroundings: • Use mosquito repellents at home, especially after the sunset when mosquitoes are most active. Dengue mosquitoes bite during the day so it’s most practical to be on alert then as well. • For infants or small kids, continuous exposure to repellents can be harmful. Use mosquito nets for them and keep them dresses in full sleeves clothes. • Dry your coolers or regularly clean it with a spoonful of kerosene or other mosquito repellent oils available in the market. • Don’t let water collect in pots or old tyres/utensils on your rooftop or abandoned part of the house. • Keep your surroundings clean. If your locality isn’t clean, drop a complaint with the MCD or combine as a society to get it cleaned. • Send your child to school in full sleeve clothes and as parents ensure that the school is taking up measures to fight mosquito breeding within the school premises. • Avoid going to parks in the evenings during this period. • Ensure fogging is done by concerned authorities time to time to kill mosquitoes around your locality. Being safe is the key. If you experience any of the symptoms for any of these diseases in you or your family members, immediately take them to the nearest health care centre to fight it at the earliest. As long as you wait, the case may get severe. Bansal Global Hospital is on alert mode this season and is constantly striving to decrease the number of cases and eradicate it in the earliest stage. But it’s only possible when every one of us join hands and fight it! Don’t let a small mosquito ruin your health. Stay safe, stay healthy!
Useful Tips For Mothers Before Delivery There’s no second thought that motherhood is a gift and one of the most beautiful phase of one’s life. But the period that precedes it, that is when you are carrying your baby in the womb, those 9 months is a mix of varied emotions. Sometimes you feel happy, sometimes tired, and frequently confused for what’s to come. It mostly happens to new mothers (first baby), they aren’t very well with the knowledge about the last phase of pregnancy and therefore panic. Keeping in view the anxieties and frequent questions that pop up in mind at this time, we have some useful information that might come handy to you: What is delivery? Delivery is the term generally used for the process that leads to child birth, often called as the ‘labor’ as well. In more official terms, it’s the end of the pregnancy period as the baby or babies leave the mother’s uterus normally or with the help of cesarean. Normal The normal mode of giving birth is when the baby passes through the vaginal passage of the mother under normal circumstances. The process is initiated when the woman is in labor. The labor can be divided into three stages to understand it well: Latent Phase: It’s the longest one when the contractions become frequent which facilitates your cervix to dilate in order to help your baby pass through the birth canal. You might fell a bit of discomfort, but it isn’t the most painful part. Active Phase: The dilation of the cervix takes place more promptly in this stage and you might feel intense pain in your back and abdomen area due to that. The urge to push down increases but the doctor recommends holding till the cervix is completely open. Transition Phase: It’s when the cervix is completely open and the mother experiences strong and painful contractions frequently and lasting much longer. At this point, the doctor asks you to push and through force the child baby is born through the birth canal. Cesarean A C-section or Cesarean Section is the process of giving birth through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Some mothers now days prefer C-section over normal delivery, in that case, the surgery is scheduled in advance. For others, it is performed only under unanticipated circumstances. Labour Pains Labour pains are towards the end of your pregnancy. You might feel cramps or pains similar to pre-menstrual /period pain. Your waters may break and you feel your lower abdomen and back aching. The intensity of pain and contractions is different for different woman, so it cannot be generalized as such, though the symptoms remain the same. Common indications of Cesarean Some of the signs that indicate you might require to go for a cesarean, includes the following: Repeated C-sections in the past. Complications in the lower genital tract that might interfere with the birth of the fetal head. Pelvic abnormalities. Cardiac conditions which required avoiding of certain procedures to be followed during vaginal Birth. Infected Fetus. Abnormal Placenta. Abnormal Labor. There can be other indication depending on the individual bodies of mothers, the position of the fetus, and other complications. In short, your doctor knows the best; don’t decide anything for yourself at this stage before taking the doctor’s view on it. Though it seems to be scary at times, you need to be calm. It isn’t going to last long and then you will get the happiest moments of your life. If you notice anything abnormal about your health, a good doctor knows best. Go for regular checkups with an experienced gynecologist and follow prescriptions and advices to reach your best condition during the time of child birth.

Malaria : A Brief Introduction – Bansal Global Hospital Malaria is a fatal systematic disease caused by a parasite called Plasmodium which is transmitted into human blood via female Anopheles mosquito. Malaria is more common during the rainy season and is widespread in tropical regions which provide plasmodium a suitable environment for survival. The parasite enter the human body through mosquito bite and travel to the very crucial organ, the liver, where they multiply and then come back to the blood stream and destroy red blood cells. The process further leads to a cascade of reactions and symptoms start showing. Symptoms usually show up within 10 days to 3 weeks but sometimes malarial parasite may stay dormant and appear later in life. Symptoms are similar to the flu and can be easily confused. Therefore, a confirmatory blood test is required. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the symptoms. The treatment includes anti-malarial medicines for healthy RBC count prescribed by practitioners. If the test for Malaria comes out to be positive, hygiene and cleanliness should be maintained around the patient and mosquitoes should be prevented around him to avoid spread of infection to healthy individuals around. On an end note, be safe from the disease which can be deadly at times. If you are travelling to malaria prone areas consult a doctor for necessary medications and carry mosquito repellants and other necessary things to stay away from mosquitoes and the disease. Most drugs used in treatment are active against the parasite forms in the blood (the form that causes disease) and include: chloroquine atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone®) artemether-lumefantrine (Coartem®) mefloquine (Lariam®) About Bansal Global Hospital A world class private hospital located in North-West Delhi, the Bansal Global Hospital offers the best treatment possible and care to its patients round the clock (24×7). 5 steps to tackle bed wetting problem in children Nocturnal enuresis or bed wetting can be very irritating and at the same time concerning for parents. It could be due to many reasons such as late maturation of bladder, cold temperature, anxiety, and other idiopathic causes. Bed wetting is normal till 6 years of age but in some kids it may stay for longer duration of time. Some ways to tackle this problem are listed below: Encourage the child to pee before bed Children should make it a habit to go to washroom before going to bed and they should be made to get up at dawn to use the toilet if necessary. In the starting days, parents should make it a routine to direct their children to do so. Restrict fluid intake before bed Children should not be given water or any fluid at least two hours before bed. The body won’t allow wastage of water if body is in scarcity of fluid. This helps in reducing chances of bed wetting in children. Maintain room temperature Sometimes bed wetting is a result of cold room temperature and child is not able to get up and use toilet. Don’t make the room too chilled and give your child a thick and cosy blanket during cold weathers and make sure your child is covered well throughout the night. Reduce anxiety Bladder control and anxiety is closely related. Talk to your child if he or she is anxious about something. Your child may also get stressed about his or her social image regarding this problem. Avoid talking about their problem in social gatherings and try to make them comfortable as much as possible. See a doctor Bed wetting is usually temporary and stops with growing age. A child specialist should be consulted if the problem persists. Medications may be required to gain bladder control. Your doctor can also teach your child some bladder stretching exercises that help in retaining urine in bladder for longer time. How to prevent and first aid burns especially on Diwali A joyful festival like Diwali can turn into a nightmare if proper safety measures are not taken while playing with fire crackers. Avoiding firecrackers is the best thing you can do to avoid any such nightmares, and the next best thing will be to remain extremely precautious and prepared for any unforeseen accident. Some safety measures are listed below to make your Diwali happy and prosperous: Keep water nearby Whenever burning firecrackers, it is important to keep safety in mind. Keep a bucket of cold water nearby so that in case of fire it can be tackled quickly and a major fire incident can be avoided. You must also dip your hand or affected body area into the water immediately if it comes in contact with naked flames or hot cracker residue. Avoid wearing synthetic fabrics Synthetic fabrics start shrinking and stick to skin when they come in contact with fire and cause much damage. While with organic fabrics, the damage caused to skin is less as they don’t stick. Hence it is recommended to wear cotton or other natural fabrics while burning crackers. Apply cold water Put your hand in running cold water in case of burn and try to avoid formation of blisters. If blisters are formed, don’t touch them as it may cause infection. Seek immediate medical attention if the burn area is large. Visit a 24hrs open hospital if the burs are. Appropriate dressing of wound If you accidently get a burn it is important to get a proper dressing. Dressing should not be too tight as it may restrict blood circulation to the area. It should not be too loose either as it may displace or may cause infections. Dressing should also be changed time to time to avoid bacterial infections. Several kinds of dressing are available nowadays to improve the cosmetic appearance of the scar formed. It would be best to visit an Emergency hospital nearby instead of doing it yourself. Medications Usually anti septic creams are applied on burn area to avoid infections. Other than this if your burn wound gets infected your doctor may recommend you oral antibiotics along with anti septic creams.
